EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A suffocating defense coupled with tenacious rebounding powered unbeaten NCAA Division II No. 2 Southern Indiana to an impressive 74-45 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
The Screaming Eagles, 9-0 overall, gave up the first five points of the contest but then responded with the next 14 as CU went scoreless for seven minutes. USI held the Jackets to just six field goals in the first half for a 29-18 advantage at the break.
After missing all six of their three-point shots in the opening period, Southern Indiana buried its first four and six of its first seven to begin the final half. Even at that, Cedarville was within 49-39 with 11:50 left.
USI iced the outcome with a 20-3 eruption over the next five-plus minutes. The 29-point margin at the buzzer was the largest of the game.
Cedarville, 6-4, entered the contest averaging nearly 83 points per game on 51 percent shooting from the floor. The Jackets were held to season-lows in points and field goal percentage (.327).
Austin Foote was the only CU player to score in double figures with 13 points.
Brian Grant totaled a team-high seven rebounds, but Southern Indiana produced a whopping 45-26 advantage on the boards.
