LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International blistered the nets from the field in its own New Year's Classic to outscore Cedarville, 87-72, for its seventh consecutive victory.
The Dustdevils, 10-3 overall, shot 63 percent in the opening half including a 6-for-11 showing outside the three-point arc for a 46-32 lead. They cooled off to 52 percent in the final frame but hit 13-of-16 free throws to keep the Yellow Jackets at bay.
Cedarville, 7-6 and playing its 10th straight contest away from home, scored the first two baskets of the second half to close within 46-36 with 18 minutes left. That's when leading scorer
Austin Foote went to the sidelines for the rest of the game with an injury.
TAMIU responded with a 10-2 spurt to regain control. The home team's largest lead was 73-50 at the 6:40 mark.
Zimmy Nwogbo poured in a career-high 25 points for the Yellow Jackets to go along with nine rebounds and four assists.
