CEDARVILLE, Ohio - An impressive three-point shooting display in the second half carried the Yellow Jackets to a 71-58 victory over Grand Valley State in front of a loud Black Out Night crowd in the Callan Athletic Center.
Cedarville knocked down 8-of-11 shots from beyond the arc and shot 63 percent from the field overall during the final 20 minutes. The performance pushed the Yellow Jackets' record to 8-0 at home and 13-7 overall.
CU became just the third team to score at least 70 points against the defensive-minded Lakers. However, it took some time to get going.
GVSU held the Jackets scoreless for nearly seven minutes midway through the first half to build a 19-13 lead. A pair of treys by freshman guard
Marcus Reineke in the final five minutes helped the home team close with a 13-4 spurt for a 26-23 advantage at the break.
The Lakers took a brief one-point lead early in the second half. Then, the two schools, who were meeting on the hardwood for the first time ever, were tied for the seventh and final time at 37-37 with 12:50 left.
A layup by
Zach Brown was followed by three balls from Reineke and
Brian Hecker which gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for good.
GVSU crawled back to within three and it was still 58-53 at the 3:20 mark. But, a pair of
Austin Foote three-pointers sandwiched around a couple free throws by
Brian Grant blew it out to a 13-point difference.
Reineke hit 5-of-7 three-pointers and finished with 17 points off the bench. Foote had all 14 of his points in the second half, Brown totaled 11 points with eight assists, and Hecker chipped in 10 points in a reserve role.
Grand Valley State falls to 10-9.
