Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The table was set for Cedarville: beat Kentucky Wesleyan at home and gain the #1 seed to host the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament. However, the Panthers rallied for the win in five sets to grab the top spot.
KWC captured the victory 21-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10 to improve to 24-6 and 12-2 G-MAC. They will welcome the G-MAC starting Thursday in Owensboro, Ky.
The Panthers were the only league team to defeat Cedarville, 20-14 and 12-2, and both matches were eerily similar. The Jackets won two of the first three sets on each occasion, but this time they let a 9-5 lead in the fifth set slip away.
"A tough loss this afternoon," said Head Coach
Doug Walters afterward. "We played pretty well for the most part, but we failed to close out the match when we had the chance. It was a disappointing end.
"
Hannah Wagner and
Amanda Bell continued a great weekend and played very well. Now, we have to defend our title on the road. I think this team will be hungry and determined next week. There is much to work on in the next couple of days."
Wagner buried 17 kills and turned aside four blocks. Bell was good for 10 kills and 14 digs.
Abby Shelton added 13 kills while
Tori Thompson pounded 11 kills with five blocks.
Stephanie Rogers chipped in four blocks.
Maddie Anderson tallied 28 assists and
Kristin Cardwell had 23 to go along with 14 digs.
Angela Becker led the back line with 22 digs.
With the tie for the G-MAC regular season title, Kentucky Wesleyan won the tiebreaker by virtue of sweeping the Lady Jackets. Cedarville is the #2 seed in the eight-team tournament and faces #7 Davis & Elkins in a quarterfinal match on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. (Eastern).
