Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. - Zach Harris delivered the winning penalty kick in the shootout giving #2 seed Cedarville the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship over top-seed Davis & Elkins.
It's the Yellow Jackets first conference title in men's soccer in 26 years.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes of regulation and an additional 20 minutes of overtime. That resulted in the penalty kick shootout in which CU prevailed, 4-3.
"It was just an exciting soccer game and fun to watch," declared G-MAC Coach of the Year
Brett Faro. "This was two good teams going at it and both goalkeepers had to make some key saves in the match.
"Our level of toughness and resilience showed against a quality Davis & Elkins team. We're excited to win the league and realize it's a step in the right direction for our program."
Cedarville had the benefit of going second in the five-man shootout. Through four rounds,
Connor Gilmour,
Dillon King, and
Timmy Waller all converted while each keeper made a stop for a 3-3 deadlock.
Ethan Dewhurst stoned the Senators' fifth kicker leaving it up to Harris to win it.
During regulation and OT play, D&E had more shots, 14-11, but the two sides each had eight on goal. Dewhurst registered seven saves while notching his 10th shutout.
Officially, the result is recorded as a draw leaving the Yellow Jackets with a final record of 13-3-4. D&E finishes 12-4-2.
CU had not won a league trophy since sharing the Mid-Ohio Conference crown in 1987 with two other schools. The Jackets last outright MOC championship was in 1979.
