ASHLAND, Ohio - Cedarville got off to good starts in two matches during Day 1 at the Ashland Invitational, but the Jackets staggered to a pair of setbacks.
Wheeling Jesuit pulled out a five-set win over CU while Tusculum came out on top in four.
The Lady Jackets had a 2-1 lead after three sets against WJU. However, the Cardinals bounced back for a 25-27, 25-13, 18-25, 25-18, 15-9 victory.
"We played well, but had too many unforced errors down the stretch," explained CU Head Coach Doug Walters. "When our serve is tough it works nicely and that really helped us."
Lori Inkrott led the attack with 11 kills. Hannah Wagner was good for 10 kills and five blocks while Stephanie Rogers added five blocks. Maddie Anderson had 22 assists; Kristin Cardwell tallied 12 assists with three service aces; and Angela Becker totaled 32 digs.
Tusculum recovered from losing the first set to grab the win 26-28, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.
Wagner hammered 12 kills with three blocks; Tori Thompson tallied eight kills and five blocks; and Rogers contributed eight kills and four blocks.
Amanda Bell totaled seven kills and 18 digs. Anderson handed out 21 assists; Cardwell served up five aces with 16 assists; and Becker led the back line with 19 digs.
"We started the Tusculum match with a strong passing game, but that quickly withered away in the third set and we couldn't get it back," said Walters. "Hopefully, we can get everyone healthy soon to give us more options when we are struggling."
Cedarville, 2-5 overall, faces Lock Haven on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and host Ashland at 2:00.
