CEDARVILLE, Ohio - They battled for 110 minutes, but Cedarville and Southern Indiana departed one another with a scoreless draw in the season opener for both schools.
It marked the first time in 48 years that the Yellow Jackets settled for a 0-0 tie in their first match.
The stat sheet was heavily weighted toward the home side. However, Interim Head Coach Brett Faro, who was making his debut leading the Jackets, knew it was a closer match than the numbers indicated.
"The way we played had something to do with it being the first match of the season, but USI made it difficult for us," said Faro. "They really pressured us.
"We didn't do much with many of our opportunities and most of theirs didn't result in shots. We need to get better in practice on Friday and come out and play well against Malone on Saturday."
The best chance for the Screaming Eagles came in the first 20 seconds when Ethan Dewhurst made one of his two saves on the night. CU then reeled off the next 15 shots - eight in the first period and seven in the second.
The Yellow Jackets ended up with the advantage 18-5 in shots overall and 8-2 on goal. Each team was whistled for 11 fouls and each was booked one yellow card. CU had the most corner kicks, 11-5.
