Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Yellow Jackets took command in the second half to down non-conference foe Shawnee State, 4-0, in the annual Homecoming match.
The two teams, who were former members of the American Mideast Conference in the NAIA, played a scoreless opening 45 minutes. Once
Connor Gilmour took his own rebound off the crossbar and muscled in the first goal in the 52nd minute, it was all Cedarville.
"I thought the win was a good step for us as a group," stated Head Coach
Brett Faro. "Shawnee made it difficult in the first half. Then, the second half was the best half of the year for us and it showed in the opportunities and goals we scored. It was a group effort and a lot of guys stepped up and played well."
Joel Twinem scored from the six-yard line on a pass from
Justin Santoro in the 74th minute for an insurance goal.
Chris Anderson headed in
Christian Alexander's corner in the 86th minute before
Daniel Rigby scored unassisted less than two minutes later.
Shots were in favor of Cedarville by counts of 19-9 overall and 9-1 on goal.
Paulo Pinto and
Ethan Dewhurst combined for the shutout - the team's fourth in the last five outings.
The Yellow Jackets are 19-2-1 in the all-time series against Shawnee State. After dropping the first two meetings between the two schools, Cedarville is unbeaten in the last 20 contests.
The Yellow Jackets, 6-2-2 overall, head to Davis & Elkins for a key Great Midwest Athletic Conference game on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
