Nothing settled as CU, Lock Haven go scoreless

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Both the Yellow Jackets and Lock Haven failed to cash in on golden scoring opportunities in the second overtime before settling for a 0-0 draw in the Eighth Annual Dave Jones Memorial Classic.

Cedarville, 2-1-1 overall, had the edge on the stat sheet through regulation time, but the two sides played on even terms throughout the two 10-minute extra sessions.

The best chance for the Jackets came in the 102nd minute. Connor Gilmour caught the LHU keeper out of position and his soft shot from the top of the box was slowly rolling toward an open net when a Bald Eagle defender cleared the ball off the line.

Lock Haven nearly left town with the victory when a shot in the 108th minute bounced off the crossbar.

"I thought we played well tonight," declared Head Coach Brett Faro. "The guys put forth a great effort on both sides of the ball and produced some really exciting, fun soccer to watch.

"I think we need to get better in the final third, but hats off to Lock Haven for defending the way they did. In some ways we got beat by the game of soccer tonight. The better team doesn't always win."

CU outshot the visitors 20-10 overall and 5-1 on goal. The begin Great Midwest Athletic Conference action this week by hosting Trevecca on Thursday and Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday. Both matches kick off at 7:00.

The Dave Jones Memorial Classic is dedicated to the former Yellow Jacket soccer player, who played at Cedarville from 1980 through 1983. He was a four-year letter winner, was a member of the 1981 team that was the NCCAA National Runner-Up, and he was voted team MVP as a senior.

Marine Corps Captain Dave Jones lost his life on August 9, 1992 in a helicopter crash near the Kuwait-Iraq border leaving behind his wife and two young sons. Recognized for being a dynamic Christian, it was noted at his memorial service that "Dave's life was characterized by a love for people, his family, soccer, and his Lord."

The Classic also benefits the Dave Jones Memorial Soccer Award. The 2014 recipients are Lady Jacket senior Elise Hurley and Yellow Jacket junior Zachary Harris, who were recognized before the game along with Dave Jones' parents, Kenneth and Alice Jones.
