Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley scored with less than three minutes left in the second overtime to deflate the Yellow Jackets, 1-0, in a non-conference regional contest.
The outcome was even tougher for CU to absorb since the Cardinals played a man down from the 84th minute on.
"Heartbreaking!" summarized Head Coach
Brett Faro. "I didn't think we were very sharp. We looked tired and were a step behind most of the game. With that said, I thought we did well to scratch and claw and stay in the game.
"At that point in the day it was unfortunate not to get a better result. I thought Saginaw was the better team overall, but when you're a man up in two overtimes with momentum and two minutes left, a loss is devastating."
SVSU, who has not allowed a goal through its first two matches, broke the scoreless tie in the 108th minute. The hosts had the edge in shots overall, 19-8, and on goal, 7-2.
Cedarville, 1-1, was whistled for more fouls, 17-10. The Jackets were cautioned three times while Saginaw was shown two yellows and a red card.
"We showed a lot of fight and toughness and I think it's a good sign of what we are capable of with all things considered," said Faro. "We almost escaped with a tie against one of the best in the region. Beyond frustrating."
Cedarville plays at Malone on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
