Findlay holds off Jackets, 69-60

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Findlay withstood a pair of second half rallies by the Yellow Jackets to post a 69-60 non-conference victory at the Callan Athletic Center.

Cedarville, 0-3, got as close as 63-60 with 1:55 left, but the Oilers scored the final six points to notch their first win of the young season.

Findlay, 1-2, expanded a 33-26 halftime margin to as much as 11 points early in the second half.

The Yellow Jackets scratched back to within 51-47 at the 8:55 mark on a basket by Patrick Bain.

The visitors increased the difference back to nine points on three occasions before CU made its final push.

J.C. Faubion led the home side with 15 points while Bain finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

Findlay started the game on a 9-2 run, but Cedarville recovered for a 19-14 advantage with 8:52 to go. The Oilers took the lead for good thanks to a 19-7 spurt to finish the period.

Quotable: Head Coach Pat Estepp

"I was proud of our effort tonight. Findlay is a perennial power, well-coached, and we knew we would have our hands full.

"We defended much better in the second half, but we showed our youth and inexperience again. We killed ourselves with turnovers, missed layups, and missed free throws.

"When we learn to finish a half we will give ourselves a better chance to win. They went on a 19-7 run to finish the first half.

"When we clean those things up, rebound better, and get more guys scoring we will be good. As frustrating as it is to lose, we made progress.

"We are really young and our guys are getting very valuable experience. They just have to keep fighting."

Numbers Game:
  • Findlay outrebounded the Jackets, 34-29.
  • CU shot 54.2 percent from the field in the second half.
  • Robert Okoro was credited with five steals and two blocked shots.
  • Findlay leads the all-time series, 70-22, which dates back to 1910.
