Yellow Jackets fall short at Walsh

Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Walsh brought the Yellow Jackets' five-game winning streak to a halt with a 71-63 non-conference decision at Alumni Arena.

It was an uphill battle for Cedarville, 5-6, from the opening tip off. The visitors found themselves in a 12-point deficit in the first half before clawing back within 36-30 at the intermission.

The Cavaliers, 5-3, enjoyed a trio of 15-point leads in the final period. The last occasion was 57-42 at the 8:20 mark.

CU answered with a 15-3 spurt. J.C. Faubion's three-pointer cut the difference to 60-57 with 3:23 remaining, but that was as close as the Jackets would get.

It was still a three-point margin, 64-61, following an Easton Bazzoli basket with 30 seconds to go. However, the Cavs iced the outcome with four straight free throws.

Bazzoli matched his career-high with 19 points while Faubion added 17.

Justice Montgomery handed out a career-high seven assists.

Quotable: Head Coach Pat Estepp

"It was great to play an old rival again and I'm looking forward to having Walsh back in the league in two years. I knew tonight would be tough playing back-to-back games when they didn't play last night.

"We were tentative offensively, but I was proud of the run we made to close the first half. Those are things we didn't do the first five games.

"The second half was very similar to the first. We were too passive and they made us pay on the boards. We defended pretty well, but we just waited too long to get aggressive offensively.

"I was really proud of our fight and the fact we made a run to get back in the game, but they made plays late when they needed them. We proved we are capable of playing with some of the better teams in our region and we just have to keep making improvements.

"We have made a lot of progress in the last month and the exciting part is we have a lot of our season still in front of us. This team has a chance to be pretty good in February."

Numbers Game:
  • Bazzoli previously scored 19 points last season vs. Wilberforce.

  • The team's seven turnovers was a season low.
  • It was the 86th meeting between the two schools since the 1965-66 season.
