Braak, Jackets move on in NCCAA regional

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Derek Braak's early goal was enough as No. 4 seed Cedarville eliminated No. 5 Cincinnati Christian, 1-0, in the first round of the NCCAA Midwest Regional.

The Yellow Jackets advance to play host and top seed Indiana Wesleyan in Marion, Ind. on Friday in the semifinals.

Braak scored his fifth goal of the season in the 9th minute when he dribbled across the 18-yard box and lined a left-footed shot inside the near post.

After that, the hosts controlled the better part of the match. They outshot CCU 16-1 overall including an 11-0 margin in the second half.

Paulo Pinto was called upon to make one save for Cedarville, 12-7-3. Cincinnati Christian closes its season at 11-7-1.

Friday's other semifinal features No. 2 Houghton (N.Y.) against No. 3 Grace (Ind.). The winners play for the region banner on Nov. 19 at IWU.

Quotable: Head Coach Brett Faro

"I honestly didn't think today was our best. We had a slow first half and had trouble moving the ball well. The second half was much better, but we struggled to make the most of our opportunities.

"We are happy to get a result and get a shutout, but we will need to be better next week to keep moving forward. I think the guys recognize that and are ready to move forward on Monday."

Five Facts:
  • Braak has scored in four of the last five games.
  • This was CU's first NCCAA playoff game since 2012.
  • The Yellow Jackets are 8-1-2 in their past 11 outings.
