Jackets drop G-MAC final in OT

Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. - No. 4 seed Alderson Broaddus scored early in the first overtime to defeat No. 3 Cedarville, 2-1, in the G-MAC Men's Soccer Championship.

It's the first conference title for AB, 11-7-2, in what was a rematch of the 2015 final.

The Yellow Jackets, 11-7-3, entered as the three-time defending champions.

The Battlers broke a scoreless duel in the 55th minute.

Cedarville needed until the 83rd minute to finally level the match when John Schwien chipped a 10-yard shot over the keeper for his second goal of the season.

Alderson Broaddus wasted little time in the opening extra season by netting the game winner just 47 seconds after the whistle.

CHAMPIONSHIP INFO

Quotable: Head Coach Brett Faro

"It was a really good game. Obviously, any time you play a team three times in a season the degree of difficulty is added a bit. I think in the end it came down to mistakes and capitalizing on opportunities and AB did that better than we did in the end. I didn't think we were quite as sharp as we needed to be, especially in the final third and came up just a bit short.

"Hats off to AB. They worked hard and they made the plays they needed to make. We are certainly disappointed in the result, but I am extremely proud of this group and the strides that they have made throughout the season and what they been able to do in the last month.

"It would have been easy at times this year with the injuries we had and some of the results that we had to make excuses or throw in the towel. These guys continued to work and believe in one another and never lose sight of what was possible.

"Championship games often come down to one or two plays and, while we are disappointed in the result, we will use this experience to grow as a program and strengthen our resolve to do what needs to be done to be back here in the future."

Five Facts:
  • AB held a slight shot advantage: 14-12 overall and 6-4 on goal.
  • Only three corner kicks total were attempted in the match - two by CU.
  • Cedarville has appeared in all five G-MAC finals ever played with a 1-2-2 record and three championships. Two of the titles came via penalty kick shootouts and both setbacks were in overtime.
  • The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series vs. AB, 7-2-1.
