Grand Valley State spoils Jackets’ home opener

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Grand Valley State made its move in the final six minutes to defeat Cedarville, 86-75, in the Jackets' home opener to begin the Eighth Annual Don Callan Classic.

The home team erased an 11-point deficit with 12 unanswered points to take a 62-61 advantage midway through the second half.

Leading 71-70 with 6:15 remaining, the Lakers went off on a 15-2 run to clinch the outcome.

Branden Maughmer scored 16 points for the Yellow Jackets, 2-2. Freshman Jacob Drees did not miss a shot in contributing 13 points off the bench.

Conner TenHove added ten points with a team-high eight rebounds. Isaiah Speelman chipped in ten points.

GVSU, 4-1, came into the contest averaging seven three-point baskets per game and made 14-of-30 from beyond the arc.

Stinger Notes:
  • Maughmer scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half.
  • Drees and TenHove tallied four assists apiece.
  • The Jackets were 8-for-8 from the free throw line - the second time this season they've been perfect.
  • The crowd was listed at 1,037.
  • Grand Valley State leads the all-time series, 5-1, with five straight victories.
  • NABC No. 22 Indianapolis nipped Ohio Dominican in the first game, 71-69.
