Walk it off! CU rallies for sweep

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Micah Stewart's bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning capped the Yellow Jackets' come-from-behind 6-5 win over Lake Erie and a sweep of their G-MAC doubleheader.

Cedarville, 6-6 overall and 3-3 G-MAC, cruised in the opener, 13-2.

The host Jackets were all but dead in their last at bat of the seven-inning nightcap trailing 5-2. What's more, the first two batters were retired.

A single, a walk, and a hit batsman brought up Bryce Hughes, who ripped a three-run double down the right field line to tie it setting up the extra-inning heroics.

Daniel Sewak doubled in a run and winning pitcher Reid Hale, 2-0, tossed a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

In the opener, Cedarville made the most of eight hits, eight walks, four hit batters, and five Storm errors to roll to the big victory.

Payton Eeles was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, two stolen bases, and three RBI. Hughes doubled in three runs while Austin Brown and Jacob Clements both tripled.

Winning pitcher Drew Minnich, 1-1, allowed two earned runs in six innings with seven strikeouts.

Stinger Notes:
  • Chase Springmeyer had two RBI, scored three times, and stole two bases in the opener.
  • Lucas Rotello had his season-opening 10-game hitting streak snapped, but he drove in two runs.
  • Sewak and Blais Hale each scored twice in the first game.
  • Second game starter Noah Schleinitz tossed five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
  • Schleinitz lowered his ERA to 2.00 and is averaging 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Both teams stranded 11 base runners in the nightcap.
  • Eeles has a six-game hitting streak featuring a trio of three-hit contests.
  • Hughes has hit safely in eight straight games and 10 of the last 11.
