Home runs do it again for Yellow Jackets

NASHVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville hammered four home runs including three in the 11th inning for an 8-5 victory  at NCBWA Division II No. 9 Trevecca and a split of their four-game G-MAC series.

The Trojans exploded for a 17-5 decision in the first game.

Sam Punzi led off the 11th with his school-record 13th home run of the season for the Yellow Jackets, 19-20 overall and 13-10 G-MAC.

Chase Springmeyer belted a pinch hit two-run dinger and Austin Brown followed with a solo shot.

The visitors needed some nifty defense just to get a chance in extras. Bryce Hughes threw out the potential winning run at the plate to end the ninth inning.

The senior righthander ultimately went to the mound to earn his first collegiate victory. He wiggled out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the 10th before sealing the deal with his second inning of work.

Payton Eeles had two hits featuring a home run and two runs scored. Alan Perry doubled and scored twice.

In the seven-inning opener, Trevecca blitzed CU with ten runs in its first at bat.

Eeles homered and drove in three runs. Perry and Lucas Rotello chipped in two hits apiece.

Stinger Notes:
  • Freshman starter Wyatt Fisher went the first six innings of game two with six K's and one walk.
  • Nine different players registered base hits in the victory.
  • The defense committed just one error on the day.
  • Punzi's 13 homers surpasses the previous mark of 12 set by Nate Davenport in 2010.
  • The Jackets upped their team record home run total to 50 on the campaign.
  • Since his 20-game hitting streak was halted, Eeles has hit safely in 12 straight.
  • Perry has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 contests.
  • Blais Hale hit .500 in the series with a homer and three RBI.
  • Cedarville clubbed 13 home runs in the four games and Trevecca drilled 12.
