CANTON, Ohio - The Yellow Jackets took advantage of a tiebreaking error by Malone to pull out a 5-3 victory and halt a long losing streak to the Pioneers. The hosts claimed the opener of the American Mideast Conference doubleheader, 6-1.
Cedarville loaded the bases with two out in the 6th inning of a 3-3 tie. Derek Graham's grounder was thrown away allowing Tyler Rost and Andrew York to score the deciding runs.
Winning pitcher Matthew Willett improved to 3-1. He tossed all seven innings with five strikeouts.
Nate Davenport was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and a run scored. York had two hits and scored twice for CU, 19-12 overall and 5-7 AMC. Malone is 25-8 and 9-3 AMC.
The outcome ended an 11-game losing streak for the Yellow Jackets against Malone. Cedarville had not beaten the Pioneers since a 4-1 decision eight years to the day on April 10, 2002. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE]
The two teams combined for nine errors in the opener. Malone enjoyed a 6-0 lead until Graham's RBI double in the 7th inning.
