CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene escaped with a 7-6 opening-game win at Cedarville and then buried the Yellow Jackets, 15-2, in the nightcap to claim both decisions of an American Mideast Conference twinbill.
CU allowed a 5-2 lead in the first game to slip away and then nearly rallied for the victory. Trailing 7-5 entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the Jackets loaded the bases with one out. Tyler Rost's hard grounder toward the left side hit the base umpire stopping play and allowing one run to score. However, the Cougars pulled off a game-ending double play to win it.
Derek Graham was 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI's, and a run scored. Rost, David Convertini, and Paul Hembekides added two hits apiece. The two teams stranded 23 base runners between them. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE]
MVNU pounded 17 hits in the second game and used a nine-run 4th inning to make it a blowout. The outcome sent the Yellow Jackets to their ninth straight loss and 13th setback in the last 14 outings.
