MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Yellow Jacket baseball Head Coach Mike Manes picked up his 200th career victory when Cedarville won at Mount Vernon Nazarene, 5-3, in the first game of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader. The host Cougars claimed the nightcap, 6-3.
Rob Nesteroff drove in three runs and rookie righthander Cullen Montgomery worked all seven innings in the first game to run his record to 7-1. The outcome gives Manes 200 wins in eight years of college coaching - 89 in four years at Trinity International and 111 in four years with the Yellow Jackets.
Alex Beelen opened the game with a triple and scored on Nesteroff's RBI groundout. A two-out, two-run single by Nesteroff in the second inning opened up a 3-0 lead against the league leaders.
Seven different Cedarville players registered base hits. Montgomery allowed six hits and struck out three.
The Yellow Jackets were poised for a rare sweep at MVNU in the second game when they broke a scoreless contest with two runs in the fifth inning. The Cougars took advantage of a shaky Cedarville defense to plate six runs, four of which were unearned, in their half of the fifth.
The Jackets, 28-12 overall and 8-6 AMC, totaled five hits in the game, all singles. David Ledbetter, who made his first plate appearances of the entire season, was 2-for-3 as the DH with an RBI and a run scored.
MVNU remains atop the league standings at 23-14 and 10-4 AMC.
