Jackets win NCCAA regional

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Nate Davenport clubbed two home runs and totaled five RBI's as the Yellow Jackets defeated Bethel, 8-4, to wrap up the NCCAA Midwest Region championship. CU won the opener, 7-1, behind the three-hit pitching of rookie David Ledbetter.

Cedarville, 33-16, advances to the NCCAA National Tournament on May 18-21 at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. The outcome set a new school mark for single-season victories and gave the Jackets their second region banner in Head Coach Mike Manes' four seasons at the helm.

Davenport, who earlier in the day was named the American Mideast Conference Player of the Year, did his damage in back-to-back innings. He drilled a two-run shot in the third with Tyler Rost aboard to make it 3-0.

Then, Davenport closed out the Jackets' four-run fourth with a three-run bomb with Cameron McWilliams and Paul Hembekides also trotting home to inflate the bulge to 7-0. It was the junior first baseman's 10th homer of the season and extended his school-record RBI total to 59.

Davenport finished 3-for-5 with five RBI's. Andrew York added two hits including a double and an RBI while #Juan Martinez, Jr. contributed two hits. Cullen Montgomery# was credited with the victory to run his record to 8-2.

In the first game, Ledbetter shut down the Pilots on three hits to up his season mark to 7-1. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter during his complete-game performance.

York was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's. His run-scoring single in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie. Davenport delivered a two-run double and Hembekides scored three runs.

The region title is Cedarville's fourth overall. The Jackets will be making their fifth appearance overall at the NCCAA Nationals.
