CU stumbles in first NCCAA game

MASON, Ohio - No. 8 seed Olivet Nazarene made the most of its scoring opportunities while the No. 4 Yellow Jackets did not in a 7-2 win over Cedarville in the opening contest of pool play at the NCCAA National Tournament.

The Tigers, 33-22 overall, wasted little time in manufacturing a run in the first inning. ONU used a single, back-to-back stolen bases, and a safety squeeze to take a lead it never relinquished.

It was a 4-0 difference before the Jackets, 33-17, finally threatened in the bottom of the third. They loaded the bases with one out when Tyler Rost's infield single scored Derek Ogle. However, that's all Cedarville could muster as the next two batters were retired.

Rob Nesteroff singled home Rost in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Tigers practically put it out of reach on a two-out, three-run double in the sixth to account for the final.

Rost finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Ogle was 2-for-3. Rookie righthander David Ledbetter suffered the loss to fall to 7-2. He struck out seven and walked three in seven innings of work.
