Cedarville ends spring break on a roll

Box Score CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Yellow Jackets completed their Florida stay with a third consecutive victory by defeating Rockhurst, 5-2, in the final game of the Clearwater Invitational.

While the offense made the most of seven hits, the defense stepped up to turn a pair of double plays and cut down two Hawks baserunners at the plate. Five CU pitchers combined to allow just two unearned runs with nine strikeouts.

Steve Cardwell's RBI single in the bottom of the second tied the contest at 1-1. He was also at the plate in the fourth when the Jackets caught a break.

With two on and two outs, Cardwell reached first on a dropped third strike. David Lenhardt followed with a two-run double scoring Chris Fox and Tyler Hurt.

The Jackets dodged a bullet in the seventh while holding on to a slim 3-2 lead. Rockhurst loaded the bases with no one out, but the CU relief corps got out of the jam with a short flyout and a double play.

Cedarville, 5-4 overall, plated two insurance runs in the eighth. Fox singled home Logan Kasabian with David Ledbetter also scoring on the play following a throwing error.

Starting pitcher Ryan Ledbetter, 2-0, worked the first six innings to get the win. He surrendered two unearned runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Rob Nesteroff tossed a perfect ninth with two strikeouts and registered his second save.

Rockhurst falls to 4-3.
