Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - No. 1 seed Trevecca Nazarene built a big lead and then held off the No. 2 Yellow Jackets, 10-7, to win the first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.
The host Trojans, 31-20, had to come out of the losers' bracket after Cedarville knocked them off two days earlier.
The teams were tied, 2-2, through five innings following an excellent performance by righthander
Steve Cardwell. He made his first start of the season on the mound and allowed just one earned run on four hits.
The bottom of the sixth inning was the turning point. CU coughed up three unearned runs and Trevecca tacked on four more in the seventh for a 9-2 bulge.
The Yellow Jackets weren't done, however. They scored two runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth. The tying run was at the plate when the contest ended.
Cardwell complimented his pitching effort by going 3-for-5 offensively with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.
David Lenhardt added three hits including a double and two runs.
David Ledbetter had two hits and two runs,
Ryan Ledbetter chipped in two hits with two RBI's, and
Zach Huskey had a pair of singles and two sacrifices.
Cedarville, 26-16, now turns its attention to the NCCAA Midwest Regional. The two-time defending champions host Spring Arbor in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday.
