Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Yellow Jackets' vaunted defense inexplicably fell apart as Slippery Rock left town with a convincing 5-2 non-conference men's soccer result.
Cedarville, 7-3-2 overall, had allowed only six goals total this fall and had not surrendered more than two goals in any of its last 25 matches. Ironically, the last to do it was Slippery Rock by a 3-1 margin early last season in Pennsylvania.
Head Coach
Brett Faro was succinct in explaining his team's performance.
"We just weren't sharp. Defensively, we made life really hard on ourselves and Slippery Rock made us pay. We didn't play to our standard. We know we have to learn from tonight and move on."
Things started off well for the home side. After missing a pair of golden opportunities in the opening minutes,
Connor Gilmour headed in a restart in the 7th minute from
Jarrett Kersten.
The Rock, 7-4, owned the rest of the match. They scored three times in a span of 14 minutes midway through the first half to take command. Goals in the 75th and 79th minutes made it 5-1.
Gilmour ripped in a 25-yarder that changed directions off of an SRU defender in the 87th minute for his 9th score of the year to account for the final.
The Yellow Jackets had not allowed five goals in a home match in nearly four years to the day. Perennial NAIA power Rio Grande was the last to do it, 5-2, on Oct. 14, 2010.
Cedarville returns to G-MAC action on Wednesday in West Virginia with a trip to Alderson Broaddus. Kickoff will be at 5:00 p.m.
