Sweet dreams! Jackets win on 'Pajama Night'

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Marcus Reineke paced five players in double figures with 24 points and Cedarville made the most of an 11:00 p.m. start to edge Ohio Dominican, 90-86, in the Third Annual Don Callan Classic.

The two teams started their respective seasons on Friday night and ended the contest at 1:10 a.m. on Saturday. It nearly went longer.

The free throw line was a "nightmare" for the Yellow Jackets until the waning moments. They knocked down their last six charity tosses in a row in the final 17 seconds to seal the outcome.

Neither side led by more than eight points in front of the loud crowd of 1,375. Lane Vander Hulst broke a 74-74 tie with a three-pointer at the 3:15 mark and then followed with another with 1:55 left.

ODU got as close as 84-83, but Cedarville kept the Panthers at arms length from the free throw line.

Reineke hit four treys and dished out four assists. Vander Hulst scored all 15 of his points in the second half.

Austin Pickett was good for 12 points. Jason Cuffee and J.C. Faubion chipped in 11 points apiece.

The Jackets host Ashland in Saturday's 8:15 p.m. contest. The Eagles, members of the GLIAC, hammered defending G-MAC champion Alderson Broaddus, 77-44 in Friday's opener.

Third Annual Don Callan Classic Info

Quotable: Head Coach Pat Estepp

"I was very proud of the toughness our guys showed. And, the crowd was unbelievable. I'm not sure we pull that out without them."

"We had a lot of different guys step up and make plays throughout the game. We were very unselfish (21 assists). However, we have to defend the lane better, keep some key guys out of foul trouble, and most importantly, make some free throws!"

"It's a long season and this is going to be a process. But, all-in-all - really proud of the effort and unselfishness we showed tonight."

Numbers Game:
  • Cedarville shot .604 from the field for the game (32-of-53).
  • The Jackets buried 12-of-25 three-pointers including 7-of-13 in the second half.
  • CU is 60-22 all-time against the Panthers.
