Jackets explode into G-MAC final

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Top seed Cedarville erupted for five second-half goals to eliminate Alderson Broaddus, 5-1, in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference semifinal and advance to Saturday's championship game.

The Yellow Jackets, 13-4-2, will host Davis & Elkins, a 3-0 winner over Salem International, in the championship at noon. It will be a rematch of the 2013 final won by CU via penalty kicks.

Cedarville and AB played a scoreless opening 45 minutes in less than ideal conditions. Light rain coupled with a cold wind kept chances to a minimum, but then the offense broke loose in the second half.

Connor Scott netted the first two goals. He scored in the 50th minute from Christian Alexander and then did it again in the 62nd from Jared Newman.

AB answered just 43 seconds later, but then the hosts put it away with three unanswered goals. Ethan Shula got the first one in the 67th minute from Chris Anderson. Justin Santoro finished off an Anderson pass in the 86th and Joel Twinem completed the scoring in the 89th from Newman.

The Yellow Jackets and D&E played once during the regular season. CU posted a 2-0 victory on the Senators' home field on Oct. 8 with goals from Anderson and Connor Gilmour.

Quotable from Head Coach Brett Faro:

Comments on the win vs. Alderson Broaddus ...
"It was a funny night with the weather and the wind and the ground was slippery. We talked at halftime about needing one goal just to open up the game a little bit and I think that's kind of what happened. Once goals were scored it forced both teams to have to attack a bit more and there was more space to exploit."

Thoughts on playing Davis & Elkins again in the G-MAC Final ...
"We're going to have to battle. Davis & Elkins is a team we beat earlier in the year at their place and they'll be gunning for us a little bit. They have players that are capable of playing extremely good soccer. We're going to have to recover quickly and be ready to play our best."

Numbers Game:
  • Cedarville is 4-0 all-time vs. Alderson Broaddus and have outscored the Battlers 11-2.
  • The Jackets had the shot advantage overall (14-6) and on goal (8-1).
  • Ethan Dewhurst played the first 63 minutes between the pipes before being shaken up on the AB goal and Paulo Pinto finished up.
  • CU is 7-1-2 at home this season.
  • The Yellow Jackets are 1-2-1 all-time against Davis & Elkins.
