Flat spell costs Yellow Jackets

Box Score PHILIPPI, W.Va. - Defending G-MAC champion Alderson Broaddus took advantage when Cedarville's offense sputtered midway through the game for a 79-71 victory.

The visiting Yellow Jackets enjoyed a 22-17 lead with 5:35 remaining in the first period. The Battlers rattled off 14 unanswered points en route to a 35-24 halftime margin.

AB scored seven of the first nine points of the second half for a 42-26 bulge - its largest advantage of the contest. The 25-4 eruption took less than eight minutes.

Austin Pickett's three-pointer got the Jackets back to within 63-59 with five minutes remaining. However, the Battlers converted 11-of-12 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

All five starters scored in double figures for Cedarville, 4-11 overall and 1-1 G-MAC. Marcus Reineke led the way with a game-high 22 points.

Jason Cuffee netted 12 points while Picket added 11. Easton Bazzoli and Leighton Smith chipped in 10 points each.

Alderson Broaddus improved to 10-5 and 4-1 G-MAC.

Quotable: Head Coach Pat Estepp

"I was really proud of our effort tonight. Give AB credit. They hit big shots when they had to and really hurt us on the boards.

"We lost that game in the first half when they went on an 18-2 run (to finish the period). We had some good looks from three and couldn't get them to fall plus had some breakdowns defensively that AB made us pay on.

"Then, when we fought our way back in the second half, they answered with a three or more often an offensive rebound. If we don't give up 24 second-chance points, then we pick up a huge road win."

Numbers Game:
  • Reineke was 4-for-4 at the line to up his league-leading free throw percentage to .902 (46-for-51).

  • The next three games and seven of the next eight will be played in the Callan Athletic Center.
  • Alderson Broaddus leads the all-time series, 3-0.
