Goaltending! CU wins stunner in last second

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - J.C. Faubion was credited with the game-winning basket with 0.3 seconds left when G-MAC leader Kentucky Wesleyan was whistled for goaltending giving the Yellow Jackets a 62-60 upset win.

The Panthers had tied the game, 60-60, on two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining. Cedarville appeared to be running out of time until Austin Pickett spotted Faubion with an alley-oop pass from the top of the key to the right low block. The sophomore's six-foot bank shot was blocked after it hit the backboard and officials immediately called the violation.

CU improved to 5-11 overall and 2-1 G-MAC. Kentucky Wesleyan, 13-4 and 3-1, had its nine-game winning streak snapped.

Neither team could get untracked in the first half, but KWC finished the last 7:30 with a 15-2 run for a 27-17 lead. The visitors' largest margin was 12 after scoring the first basket of the final period.

The Yellow Jackets finally squared the score, 50-50, on two freebies by Jason Cuffee at the 7:02 mark. Leighton Smith's basket with 6:18 to go made it 52-51 and CU never trailed again even though there were three ties in the final minutes.

Faubion finished with a game-high 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Marcus Reineke scored all 10 of his points in the second half to go along with four assists. Smith tallied 10 points and four blocks.

Quotable: Head Coach Pat Estepp

"That was the biggest win this group has had in the last two years. It was a hard fought game that reminded me a lot of some of our old rivalry games against Walsh.

"I was really proud of our toughness and perseverance. It's also the best job we have done on the boards all season.

"The entire second half our guys kept their composure and kept fighting. J.C. (Faubion) and (Patrick) Bain gave us some great minutes off the bench! KWC did a good job taking threes away from Marcus (Reineke), but he did a great job getting his teammates shots.

"I thought Evan (Kraatz) taking that charge in his only playing time in the second half was a huge play for us, along with A.P.'s (Pickett) offensive rebound and game winning assist. All-in-all it was the little things that we preach about all the time that gave us that win. I couldn't be prouder of the men I coach!"
