Jackets three-peat G-MAC; await NCAA bid

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Top seed Cedarville needed penalty kicks to outlast No. 2 Alderson Broaddus for its third consecutive G-MAC Men's Soccer Championship.

NCAA Tournament bids will be announced at 6:00 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com. All Division II men's soccer berths are awarded on an at-large basis.

The two teams battled to a 1-1 draw in two overtimes. The host Yellow Jackets, 14-3-2, won the PK shootout, 4-2, to retain the trophy.

Alderson Broaddus, 10-6-3, stunned the home side by scoring just 23 seconds into the match. Chances were at a premium the remainder of the first half with the Battlers holding a 4-3 edge in shots.

After that, it was all Cedarville. The Jackets finally broke through when sophomore midfielder John Schwien equalized in the 73rd minute with his first goal of the season. Joel Twinem assisted.

Despite CU having more shots, 12-1, over the final 65 minutes, the championship came down to PK's.

AB went first, missed its opening try, and goalkeeper Paulo Pinto stopped one. The Jackets were perfect with Connor Gilmour, Schwien, Twinem, and Jon Brown all converting.

Quotable: Head Coach Brett Faro

"It was every bit what we thought it would be - it was a battle. We made life harder for ourselves when we let in a goal 20 seconds into the game and one of our best players was injured 20 seconds into the game. There was some doubt there I think.

"Our guys showed a lot of belief, a lot of heart, and togetherness to continue to battle even when things didn't seem to be going our way. There were balls cleared off the line and corner after corner not falling our way.

"It would have been easy just to give in and say today is not our day. For the guys to continue to fight and scrap, I was really proud of them.

"For us at the end of the day, it's not about wins and losses, but a chance to play together and use our gifts and abilities to glorify the Lord."

Numbers Game:
  • The conference championship is the 15th in school history.
  • Cedarville has won two of its three G-MAC titles on PK's (4-3 at Davis & Elkins in 2012).
