CU bottoms out in G-MAC opener

Box Score PHILIPPI, W.Va. - Trevecca jumped on the #4 seed Yellow Jackets from the opening tap and the #5 Trojans eliminated Cedarville, 87-69, at the G-MAC Men's Basketball Championship.

TNU sprinted to leads of 10-1, 17-3, and 28-12. However, an 11-4 rally to finish the half brought the Yellow Jackets back within 39-34.

The Trojans buried back-to-back three-pointers to open the second half and Cedarville never recovered. The bulge grew to as much as 66-44 midway through the period.

Freshman Patrick Bain came off the bench with a career-high 16 points. Leighton Smith tallied 14 points and Austin Pickett added 12. J.C. Faubion provided nine points while Easton Bazzoli had eight points and eight rebounds.

All-G-MAC First Team guard Marcus Reineke was held to six points, 12 below his average. He ends his career with 1,425 points which places him 23rd on the school's all-time scoring list.

The Yellow Jackets won five of their last seven games to finish the the 2014-15 campaign with a 13-16 record.

Quotable: Head Coach Pat Estepp

"I hate it for our seniors that we chose to play our worst game of the season tonight. I have to take responsibility for that! Give Trevecca credit, they were much better than us. For whatever reason we looked like we were moving in sand all night.

"Our whole focus in our scouting report was to contain their two guards and we let (Byron) Sanford score the first 10 points of the game! Their two guards combined for 30 points and 15 assists.

"We could not buy a basket early. We battled back at the end of the first half, thanks to J.C. (Faubion) and Patrick (Bain). I thought we would bounce back in the second half like we had so many times in conference play, but tonight wasn't our night. They shot really well, but we let them do whatever they wanted. It's a frustrating way to finish considering how well we had been playing.

"I am really proud of our seniors and their leadership. This team made some great strides throughout the second half and we had been playing really good basketball."

Numbers Game:
  • Bain's previous career-high was 13 points vs. Davis & Elkins.
  • Reineke's 6 points was his second-lowest of the season and the first time since Dec. 16 vs. Maryville (9) that he was held to single digits.
  • Reineke finished .918 at the free throw line to break Chris Reese's mark of .892 set during the 1988-89 season.
  • Trevecca won two of the three meetings this season.
  • Cedarville still leads the all-time series, 7-4.
