CHICAGO, Ill. - Former Yellow Jacket distance running standout Sergio Reyes placed 8th overall and was the highest finisher among American competitors at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Oct. 11.
Reyes, a 2002 graduate of Cedarville University, covered the 26.2-mile course in 2:15:30. It was his third marathon of the calendar year after running at Boston in the spring and at Cincinnati in the summer. [CHICAGO MARATHON SITE - MEN'S TOP 10 FINISHERS pdf]
Reyes works for the USAF as a civilian flight test engineer at the Air Force Flight Test Center in Edwards AFB (Calif.). As far as running is concerned, he competes for the Asics Aggies in an elite group that is spread out across the state of California. He also serves as their Olympic Development Program Director.
A few shorter races are on the docket for the remainder of the year for Reyes. Prior to the Chicago Marathon, he was piling up 160-plus miles per week in training.
Reyes transferred to Cedarville in the fall of 2000 and assembled an outstanding two-year career with the Yellow Jackets. He was a two-time NAIA All-American in cross country placing 6th in 2000 and 4th in 2002. Reyes was a two-time NCCAA All-American and was the 2002 national champion. Reyes was a six-time NAIA All-American on the track in 2001 and 2002. He was the 2002 NAIA Outdoor 10,000 meter champion and was the NCCAA Outstanding Performer of the Meet that same year. Reyes still holds school records in the indoor 5K as well as the outdoor 5K and 10K.
