POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The #13 seed Yellow Jackets had their season come to an end by the slimmest of margins as #4 Bellevue (Neb.) escaped with a 70-69 win in the second round of the 19th Annual NAIA Division II National Tournament at College of the Ozarks.
Cedarville had the last possession with the length of the court to negotiate following a shot clock violation by the Bruins with 9.6 seconds remaining. Derrick Hannon took the inbounds pass and made the most of a desperate situation after Bellevue cut off all passing and driving lanes. He shook off a defender at the left side of the foul line and his off-balance 15-footer rimmed out at the buzzer.
It was the second straight nailbiter for the Jackets, who needed overtime to eliminate Warner Pacific (Ore.) in the first round 24 hours earlier. This time, CU battled back from a seven-point deficit with four minutes left and nearly pulled off another late victory.
Senior guard Chris Beals went out with a flourish by pouring in a game-high 28 points which was just one shy of his career high. Austin Foote was the only other player to reach double figures by providing 11 points in a reserve role. Ricardo Alliman hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
Cedarville had its 10-game winning streak snapped and ends the campaign at 26-9. Bellevue won for the 24th time in the past 25 games in improving to 27-7.
Beals ends his career with 1,451 points and finished second all-time at CU in three-point field goals made with 290. Alliman tallied 1,443 points and ranked sixth in rebounding with 1,091. [STATS]
