Lady Jackets advance to NCCAA region final

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville bounced back to eliminate Spring Arbor, 3-1, in the NCCAA Midwest Regional after losing to the Cougars, 2-0, in the first round.

The host Lady Jackets face top seed Indiana Wesleyan for the championship. IWU needs to only win one game to claim the banner while Cedarville must win twice in the double-elimination format.

Winning pitcher Kayla Thornsberry, 6-6, struck out seven and tossed a complete game to lead CU to victory over Spring Arbor. Her only blemish was allowing an unearned run in the 7th inning.

The Jackets, who were playing as the visitors on the scoreboard, started quickly when Kendra Kassonie doubled down the left field line to lead off the game. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Zorn and then scored on a single by Paige Stewart.

It remained 1-0 until Cedarville tacked on two unearned runs in the 5th. Kenleigh Ludlow singled in a run and Kassonie produced another on an RBI groundout.

Ludlow finished with two hits including a triple for the Jackets, 21-26 overall. Spring Arbor, 24-19, stranded 11 on base including runners on second and third when the game ended. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE]

Spring Arbor, the #2 seed, opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over #3 Cedarville. The Cougars broke a scoreless tie with a run in the 5th inning on a bases loaded single. Centerfielder Jenna Fox fired a perfect strike to catcher Meghan Creech to throw out what would have been a second run on the play.

The Cougars added an insurance run in the 6th. The Lady Jackets had only two hits in the contest - a single in the 1st inning by Stewart and a single by Ludlow in the 6th. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE]

In the middle game of the day, Indiana Wesleyan edged Spring Arbor, 3-1, in a battle of Mid-Central Conference foes. [IWU/SPRING ARBOR BOXSCORE]
