CU, Falcons trade one-run outcomes

LORAIN, Ohio - The Yellow Jackets opened the American Mideast Conference schedule with a 2-1 victory at Notre Dame and then came up just short in a 6-5 setback in the nightcap.

Rookie righthander Cullen Montgomery improved his record to 5-0 with a complete-game performance in the opener. He surrendered six hits and struck out three.

Cedarville pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the third inning of what turned out to be a pitchers' duel. After loading the bases with no one out, the Jackets needed a two-out throwing error on Tyler Rost's grounder to score Alex Beelen and Cameron McWilliams.

Montgomery escaped a big jam in the fourth inning giving up just one run. The Falcons loaded the bases with no one out and got their only tally of the contest with a two-out walk.

Beelen had two hits and scored a run while Michael Roe added two hits including a double. Cedarville outhit the hosts, 7-6, and Notre Dame, who left 11 runners on base, had its 10-game winning streak snapped.

The Yellow Jackets struck quickly in the second game. Beelen led it off with a double and came across the plate on Nate Davenport's two-out single. The Falcons took it from there and built a 6-1 lead entering the seventh inning.

Cedarville rallied for four runs in its final at bat, but came up a two-out hit short of either tying or taking the lead. Beelen's one-out double started the uprising. Andrew York doubled in a run and Dan Petke singled home another. The Jackets, 19-7 overall and 1-1 AMC, also scored on a wild pitch and an error.

Beelen finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Petke was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Notre Dame is 18-7 and 1-1 AMC.
